Venerable and vulnerable
Among early February’s big news was an announcement that The Washington Post, a venerable U.S. newspaper, cut staff by one-third and is curtailing or altogether closing several of its news sections including overseas bureaus such as in the Middle East.
The Post has been both venerable and vulnerable for a long time, as is true for other papers. Papers need to manage multiple threats, from overt and covert oppression by governments to the advent of the online world and associated shifts in the flow of advertising dollars to changing reader preferences and interests to ownership structure and management of content and operations.
